Houston-area athletes delivered a strong showing on the opening day of the UIL track and field state championships Thursday, making several trips to the podium at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.Lewis makes school historyThe Iowa Colony sprinter instead etched her name into the record book by winning the 400 with a time of 55.74 seconds. It marked the first state championship and state medal for the Alvin ISD school, which opened in 2022.
Lewis had the fastest qualifying time coming out of regionals, and she backed that up by crossing the finish line nearly two seconds ahead of the closest competitor. Lewis was also on the Pioneers’ 4x400 relay team that took bronze at 3:55.36. That squad also included Arius Williams, Hannah Young and Bailey Wilturner.Stafford senior Andrew Huff became the first athlete in school history, male or female, to win a throwing event at the state meet. He took gold in the discus with a top mark of 179 feet, 9 inches. That was more than 11 feet further than the next closest competitor.
El Campo junior Oliver Miles had a monumental day as well. He became the first male athlete from his school to win gold since 1993. He did so by winning the triple jump competition with a top mark of 50 feet, 10 inches. Miles edged out Taylor senior Jarvis Anderson on his final attempt of the day.Brazosport senior Xavier Butler finished his high school career with a pair of silver medals.
Butler blazed his way to second place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.54 seconds. He followed that with a runner-up finish in the 200, clocking in at 20.90.
