The fantasy franchise, which initially began with Russell Mulcahy’s 1986 feature film of the same name, follows Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman who must battle his last eternal enemies.
Speaking to Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stahelski reveals that in creating this reboot, he and his creative team brought together elements of the previous TV shows to create an even more expansive Highlander franchise. He even alluded to the reboot potentially acting as a prequel. Read his full comments below:
“I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is when you have the tagline ‘there can only be one’, you can’t just kill everybody the first time. I’ll say it for you first, our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that, but we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property.
What Else Do We Know About The Highlander Reboot? Rumors of a fresh remake of the original Highlander dates back as far as 2008. Since then, there have been reports of previous failed iterations involving directors like Justin Lin , Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and a couple of others. Stahelski is only the latest potential director, and his new update indicates he's still fully invested in Highlander's future, which bodes well for its development.
While there have been no concrete reports regarding the direction Stahelski’s Highlander remake is going to take, there have been suggestions it will play out like a modern tragedy, one that’s more grounded in reality, as opposed to the more fanciful nature of the original movies and television show. Regarding a release date for Highlander, nothing has been confirmed as of yet, particularly since filming doesn't appear to be starting anytime soon amid the SAG-AFTRA strike.
