Nik Barry-Shaw of the Council of Canadians says Ottawa's deal with P.E.I. has been applauded by pharmaceutical companies who are highlighting it as an alternative to a national pharmacare system. Council of Canadians • Special to The Guardian - Stu Neatby P.E.I. Health Minister Mark McLane said over 24,000 Islanders have taken advantage of the lower cost medication since June. Eighty-five new medications have been added to the province’s formulary since 2021.

Innovative Medicines Canada , a lobby group for pharmaceutical companies such as Bayer, AstraZeneca and P.E.I.’s BioVectra, has called national, single-payer pharmacare “unrealistic.” Some members of the P.E.I. Health Coalition, who held a press conference last week, said Canadians need to push the Trudeau government to follow through on his pharmacare promises.
