Yuri Ivanenko, who fled the war in Ukraine with his family last spring to live in the Greater Toronto Area, fears he will need to return to war-torn Ukraine if he does not find a job soon.
Yuri Ivanenko, who fled the war with his family, says he needs to find a job soon or may need to return to Ukraine.
Living in a one-bedroom Toronto apartment with multiple generations of relatives, he estimates he has enough money left from a modest Ukrainian pension and selling his car back home to support his family for a couple more months. Ivanenko and his family members live in Toronto. He says he would like to stay but may not be able unless he finds work soon.
"People coming in usually have some expectations of how soon they're going to be hired…. It's not always the reality," she said. "It might take a few months, it all depends."Organizations like HMC Connections help newcomers find employment by providing free resumé help, holding job fairs and getting on the phone with potential employers willing to hire Ukrainians or other immigrants, she says.
He says the organization has been hearing of many Ukrainians finding employment, but "within low level jobs, nothing that matches their qualifications and experience."Ivanenko returned to Ukraine for a few weeks in the fall of 2022 to sell his car and attend to matters he could not wrap up when he fled a year ago. He picked up his Toronto job search again in December, but still hasn't found a job and is growing anxious.
