WarnerMedia executives said they invested $2 billion to launch HBO Max and fill it with content - with no expectation of meaningful revenue in the first year. Indeed, it won’t likely produce a profit until 2025. HBO Max enters a crowded marketplace, awash in original content and formidable competitors. Netflix has more than 60 million domestic subscribers, and more outside the U.S., and newcomers Apple and Disney, which will get a jump on HBO Max, launching in November.
