State and federal forecasters are projecting the Harrisburg region’s air pollution at “moderate” levels for Saturday, a decline from the hazardous ratings seen over the past three days due to drifting smoke from wildfires in Canada.

On Friday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection had issued a “code orange” warning on the agencies’ color-coded air quality scale - with an orange rating meaning the air may be unhealthy for sensitive or vulnerable people.

As of Friday evening, however, most central Pennsylvania air monitors that were reading orange earlier in the day had dropped back to the yellow zone - or “moderate” pollutant concern - on the EPA’sThat yellow rating is expected to continue into Saturday, according to the EPA forecast, as the haze of pollution from the fires continues to dissipate.

As of 7 p.m., Harrisburg’s reading for PM2.5 - fine particle pollution of 2.5 microns or less in size - was 11.1 micrograms per cubic meter of air, according to the DEP. This is drastically lower than readings from the prior 72 hours. PM2.5 levels in Harrisburg spiked to an unprecedented 409.8 micrograms per cubic meter at 1 a.m. Thursday morning,If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
