Poet and cultural critic Hanif Abdurraqib talks about helping younger authors in Columbus grow and explore their talents:
In addition to winning national awards, Abdurraqib had two new books published this month,"Respect the Mic," a poetry collection he co-edited; and his first picture book,“It's funny because I actually wrote this book in 2018,” he said. “Obviously, my name is on it as the writer, but Ashley Evans did all the work. I wrote 1,200 words 3½ years ago, and she spent that time in between bringing that language to life. Her illustrations absolutely jump off the page.
“Not until maybe 2010,” he said, speaking from his home on the East Side. “I didn't really write a lot when I was young. I read a lot, but I didn't write a lot. I didn't really have any ambitions of being a writer, or having a 'career' as a writer. That wasn't where my dreams were.”“Around 2011, I started going toand Writing Wrongs here in Columbus. Those were the places that formed my writing life,” he said.
"It was, 'Who should I be reading? Who are you reading? Who's a poet who excites you now?' If someone else asked me that, I might say, 'Oh, go read X poet.' And then the next week I would ask, 'Hey, did you read that poet?' And they'd say, 'No, I haven't gotten around to it yet," William Evans said.
