For many women in America, Judy Blume’s books were dog-eared talismans that marked the passage from childhood to adolescence. The author, who revolutionized young-adult fiction, was born on this day in 1938.
Many women can tell you when and where they first read a Judy Blume book, but I’m pretty sure that a lot of them can’t remember how exactly they got their hands on it. That’s because, like a beloved pet or a well-worn pair of sneakers, Judy Blume’s books were always just sort of there, part of the architecture and set dressing of many a young girl’s life.
Blume is best known for the way in which she dealt frankly—and, for this reader at least, often titillatingly—with puberty and sex. While adults spoke of flowerings and blossomings, the girls and boys in Blume’s books navigated far more visceral, sticky situations.
Like “Harriet the Spy” author Louise Fitzhugh before her, Blume’s œuvre is filled with young female protagonists for whom boys, breasts, and sexual base-clearing are, if not irrelevant, sort of beside the point. In book after book, Blume gives us girls who have rejected the preciousness of childhood yet preserved the self-possession, ambition, and appetite for adventure that their peers and elders find in short supply.
