The former Morrison School, owned by the Glace Bay Y’s Men’s and Women’s Club is in need of major repairs as a result of Fiona damages. NICOLE SULLIVAN/CAPE BRETON POSTGLACE BAY, N.S. — The Glace Bay Y’s Men’s and Women’s Club is considering selling the school it repurposed as a community centre.
In 2018, the club purchased the former Morrison school from the International Centre for English Academic Preparation for $1 and expected to use the space for its programs and offer rentals for its gym, offices, storage and meeting rooms. “We were just starting to get some projects up and running but COVID set us back,” said board member Jeff Knarr. Then came Fiona. The gable on the back end of the roof was torn off, flipped over the roof and a large section of roof was damaged.
“The damages inside the building are on par with that as well,” he said, noting the water damage to the wood floor, plaster and electrics.“The school is too far gone — we just can’t afford it,” said club vice-president John Donovan.
