DAVID MUNDEE With a goal to “wake up the echoes,” veteran assistant coach Al Gilmore is taking over as the new Geneva County head football coach.
People are also reading… Gilmore replaces Josh Thompson, who resigned at the Hartford school last month as both football and boys basketball coach. Geneva County filled only the football position on Thursday. The school hopes to hire boys basketball plus a girls basketball opening at a later board meeting.
“I am excited as this is a lifetime opportunity,” Gilmore said. “My wife is from Geneva County. She was born there and graduated from Geneva County High School in 2002 as valedictorian. My in-laws still live there, so there is a family connection. After graduating in 2001 from G.W. Long where he played for Jimbo Payne, Gilmore attended West Alabama on a football scholarship, but due to an injury after his first year he transferred to Troy University,
He is most known for his recent work in the last six years at Elba, including helping the Tigers to the Class 1A state semifinals this past season and to 56 wins in six seasons.
