Michael Andlauer won\u0027t be a micro\u002Dmanager in his role as the Ottawa Senators new owner.
Yes, the Toronto healthcare billionaire will be involved in the day-to-day decisions made by the organization, but he’ll leave it up to general manager Pierre Dorion, coach D.J. Smith and the rest of the staff to make whatever moves they feel are necessary to make the Senators better.
“I know one of the first orders of the day was Pierre talking about D.J. I said, ‘Stop, I hold you accountable. You pick your coach. It’s not for me to decide.’ But I like to be a conscience, I like to listen and observe. To me, it’s important that we have the right culture on and off the ice.” One situation he’s waiting to see resolved is the stalemate with restricted free agent centre Shane Pinto. He’s not in camp and has been skating near his home in Long Island, N.Y., while waiting for his New York-based agent Lewis Gross to get a contract done with Dorion.
The Philadelphia Flyers are willing to take an Ottawa contract off the books, but want a high-end prospect as well.“The Pinto situation is a unique one,” Andlauer said. “I don’t know the last time Ottawa was at the salary cap … probably never. We’re in a bit of a pickle right now trying to figure this out.
“At the end of the day, it’s a matter of sustainability and making sure that we have you know that we have enough money in the coffers to pay our players and making sure that we’re sustainable,’ he said on“So that’s why I tell the players it’s not me that pays you it’s the fans, so, you know, let’s take care of the fans. Let’s make sure the experience is right, both on and off the ice.”
