Michael Andlauer is convinced if the Ottawa Senators make the move downtown, the people will come.
But the Ottawa Senators’ new owner needs to find a way to carve out a path to make the dream of a move out of the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata to downtown a reality. After shelling out more than a billion dollars to purchase the Senators with a consortium, Andlauer estimated a new downtown arena — no matter where it’s located — will cost $900 million and indicated if he’s going go down that path, it has to make financial sense.
While going through the purchase process, Andlauer met more than once with National Capital Commission chief executive officer Tobi Nussbaum and Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe about the arena.“Everything I hear, I feel, and I speak to want it. So, for me, it’s a no-brainer,” Andlauer told CBC radio’s Hallie Cotnam. “How we go about it is something that has to be done collaboratively in my opinion. I believe the fans want it.
An arena project is in their wheelhouse, and they bring that expertise to the table. Plus. Senators chief executive officer Cyril Leeder and chief operating officer Erin Crowe both went down this path with late owner Eugene Melnyk in 2016, so they know what it takes. Though Sutcliffe has mentioned several options for a new home for the Senators, sources say the leading contender is Bayview Yards, which is located just west of LeBreton and north of Scott Street.
