The Senators closed out their three-game trip with a textbook 3-0 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday at the Canada Life Centre and they’ll finish the pre-season with a visit by the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.
General manager Pierre Dorion noted that was one of his top priorities during the off-season after the club used a franchise-record seven goalies last year because injuries and inconsistency that set the club back. Trying to get this team to the playoffs for the first time in seven years, Dorion wasted no time signing unrestricted free-agent goaltender Joonas Korpisalo to a five-year, $20-million US deal on July 1.
In both cases, the Jets and Penguins had lineups that closely resembled those they’ll ice on opening night. Whether Korpisalo will play the club’s final game against the Habs won’t be determined until after the morning skate.“You’re going to need good goaltending to do anything,” coach D.J. Smith said after the club’s victory in Winnipeg. “Now we’ve just got to carry that into the regular season.”
It has helped Forsberg that he has a good relationship with Korpisalo. They started their careers together with the Columbus Blue Jackets and won the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup with the Lake Erie Lock Monsters during the 2016 playoffs. The approach to how the goalies prepared for the regular season changed before camp started. Smith, Bierk and the staff opted to give the goaltenders full games throughout the three-week pre-season.
