The Senators’ general manager is confident the group he has assembled will serve up more winning hockey.

But the Senators’ general manager is confident the group he has assembled will serve up more winning hockey when the 2023-24 campaign gets under way Oct. 11 against the Carolina Hurricanes on the road. With the start of main camp set for Wednesday at the Canadian Tire Centre, Dorion, who has been in his role since April, 2016, filled in for incoming owner Michael Andlauer as Sutcliffe’s guest at his monthly breakfast at City Hall and expressed confidence the Senators will compete this season.

“All the pieces are in place now. Most of our young core is signed long-term. We feel like we’re almost there. I see a lot of good things for this team, not just for this year but for many years to come. I think it’s exciting.”If people want Dorion to declare publicly there will be playoff hockey here in the spring, he’s not going to get caught up in the hype. The club is excited about adding the likes of goaltender Joonas Korpisalo along with winger Vladimir Tarasenko through free agency.

“People are talking playoffs. I don’t want to make bold predictions,” Dorion said. “I want to see our team play through camp. A lot of teams in the East have gotten better. Both sides want to get a deal in place before the club’s golf tournament is held Tuesday at the Loch March Golf and Country club. Dorion said those discussions are continuing because nobody wants Pinto to be absent to start camp because he’ll play a key role here this year.

The expectation is Andlauer will complete the purchase of the Senators for $950 million and will be introduced at the rink with his partners during a news conference next week once the NHL’s board of governors has rubber-stamped the deal.Article content
