With energy costs rising, as well as national insurance, food costs and inflation, surviving on benefits has been much more difficult this year. Campaign groups and charities spent much of 2022 calling for benefits to rise in line with inflation to help people with the cost of living.
The September CPI measured inflation at 10.1 per cent, so this is how much benefits will increase by. The government said this should see around 19 million families see their benefits increase from April 2023, and the chancellor said on average families would benefit by around £600 next year. Hunt told the House of Commons during his Autumn Statement: "I am also committed to helping people already in work to raise their incomes, progress in work and become financially independent. So we will ask over 600,000 more people on universal credit to meet with a work coach so that they can get the support that they need to increase their hours or earnings.
