Guardians former utility infielder saw Stephen Vogt's last homer and hit from the on deck circle.
Clement, a fourth round pick of the Guardians in 2017, was trying to make it through the season with Cleveland. The Guardians were on the way to an AL Central title and he wanted to be part of it.After a game on Sept. 19, he was designated for assignment. Four days later he was claimed on waivers by the A’s. Oakland was well on its way to losing 102 games, but Clement was back in the big leagues.
Vogt, 37 at the time, was retiring at the end of that season, but Clement said that was the farthest thing from his mind. “He didn’t have to be out there. He wasn’t playing that day, but he was still getting his work in. He’s a great role model.”“It’s a leader,” explained Clement. “It’s a guy who brings everyone together. Someone who puts the team over their own self. He’s the epitome of that. I watched him for two weeks and I’m going to try to do that in my own career because it’s no coincidence that he played for 10 seasons in the big leagues.
He’s not going to the Hall of Fame as a player. No one from the New Yorker was in the pressbox to give it the Updike treatment. But Clement was on deck when it happened and he couldn’t have enjoyed it more.
