This weekend's storm, forecast to move up the coast Saturday, will be as dangerous for its high winds as it will for its precipitation.

“Given their explosive development, it was an easy path to take to just call these systems ‘bombs,’”

The story noted that bomb cyclones are most common over warm ocean currents, such as the Gulf Stream off the east coast of North America or the Kuroshio east of Japan. “In both regions they draw energy from both the typical north-to-south variation in temperature and the warm water. Over land, although cyclones are common, it is very unusual to see them intensify so rapidly,” the story said.

Much like a strengthening hurricane, the result is a storm marked by increasing winds blowing off the ocean that will whip the snow into deep drifts. Those in the path, such as residents on Long Island and in much of New England, can expect a crippling storm that will shut down those regions for a couple of days., Boston appears to be in the bull’s-eye, with 18 to 24 inches of snow and gusts as high as 55 mph. “It is not out of the question for the blizzard to climb into the top-five biggest snowstorms to impact Boston” and could be the biggest ever for hit the city in January.

Other locations that are bracing for a similar dump include Providence, Rhode Island, Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Portland, Maine,A couple of spots could get as much as 3 feet of snow the kind of result one would expect out of something called a bomb cyclone.
