We can safeguard the rights of residents while offering attractions for visitors — if leaders at all levels work together.

These, and the fresh reports from the City of Ottawa’s auditor general and the Ottawa People’s Commission are starting to provide insights into the chaos that unfolded and indicate what we must do to prevent governance and policing failures in future.
As residents, our property taxes pay for local police forces whose mission is to serve and protect us. The time has come for the RCMP to provide a coordinated and effective response to policing needs near Parliament, at embassy sites and during state visits. Release the Ottawa Police from duties that are outside core city policing requirements.
Having the parliamentary precinct, including the Senate, Prime Minister’s Office, House of Commons, offices of parliamentarians, the Supreme Court, the Bank of Canada and others all within walking distance offers tremendous potential. We fail the G7 capital standard by having a road network serving purely local needs. The threat of having large equipment, such as trucks, rumbling into these areas, even if police seem more alert today, remains a security risk.
Public spaces are for people, including locals and visitors — for arts, sport, our history, reconciliation efforts, the urban forest, and innovation. We can give these valued urban spaces a Canadiana flavour for all to enjoy.
