The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first gene therapy treatment for people with a severe form of epidermolysis bullosa.
An advanced clinical trial in 2022 tested Vyjuvek on 31 people with RDEB. According to information presented to the U.S. FDA, 65 per cent of wounds treated with Vyjuvek completely healed within six months as compared to 26 per cent of those treated with a placebo.
Krystal Biotech did not respond to inquiries about if and when it intended to seek approval for Vyjuvek in Canada. “I’m hoping it can help heal some wounds for me,” said Molinaro, an artist and wellness advocate. “But I think it could really help someone younger who has not suffered as much damage … I think this is an amazing way to tackle EB.”
