The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first gene therapy treatment for people with a severe form of epidermolysis bullosa.
The treatment, called Vyjuvek, has not yet been submitted to Health Canada for approval.“There is quite a bit of talk and excitement about this in our community, particularly since this is a topical treatment,” said Deanna Molinaro, a board member with DEBRA Canada, the national charity that assists people with EB.
People with RDEB suffer painful and debilitating skin blisters all over their bodies that can lead to disfigurement, vision loss and death. Many also develop an aggressive form of skin cancer.Article content Krystal Biotech did not respond to inquiries about if and when it intended to seek approval for Vyjuvek in Canada.
