From bike parking to farmers markets to more inclusive neighbourhoods, it\u0027s about to be overhauled for the first time in 15 years.

The target for approval by council is late 2025. Multiple versions of the new bylaw will be presented before then, including a first draft in early 2024. The city has released a series of discussion papers to get things started, and it’s inviting the public to give them a read and share thoughts through online surveys.

Historically, the zoning across much of Ottawa has restricted development to one detached house per lot. Among the results of this, the discussion paper states, are neighbourhoods where low-income, racialized and otherwise marginalized people can’t afford to live.Article content Actually making those neighbourhoods happen means the new edition of the zoning bylaw must be more flexible in the land uses it permits, staff write, “so that services and amenities can be established close to where people live.”Article content
