The families of the victims of schoolgirl serial killer Paul Bernardo are urging the Supreme Court to grant them access to his files for future parole hearings. They argue that the privacy rights of killers should not outweigh the rights of victims and their families.

The stone-faced bureaucracy that is Canada’s legal system has been fanatically determined for decades to protect the privacy rights of killers and other arch-criminals.

The docs reportedly contain psychological assessments, health, case management reports and audio recordings of his parole hearings. “How is it that we have a public parole hearing and the evidence that is being presented at that hearing is somehow secret?” lawyer Tim Danson, who represents the victims’ families, told CBC.
