OTTAWA — Canada could revisit calls to declassify documents about the presence of Nazi war criminals in the country, Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Wednesday, as the fallout continued over Parliament's recognition last week of a man who fought

Jewish advocacy organization B'nai Brith Canada has reiterated its long-standing call for the government to make all records about the admittance of former Nazi soldiers public.

Miller said he has read the report from a 1985 commission on war criminals in Canada twice this week, and while he has more to learn about what information from that report has been redacted, he thinks the discussion about what records should be released could be re-examined. The commission found there were about 600 former members of the Waffen-SS Galicia Division — the unit Hunka fought for — living in Canada at the time. But Justice Jules Deschênes said membership in the division did not itself constitute a war crime.

Justice Minister Arif Virani said Canada has a war crimes unit to investigate and when enough evidence exists it can lay charges and prosecute. But he did not say whether he supports opening up the records publicly.
