While team remains on hunt for roster help, a bad weekend or a good offer could prompt them to unload one of their coveted pitchers

Joe Musgrove is living the dream as a lifelong San Diegan who grew up a fan of the team he plays for. This thing he is so inextricably and multi-dimensionally a part of was supposed to be different in 2023. He gets it.

They believe they can make a run to the postseason despite sitting 6½ games out of the final National League wild-card spot at the start of play Thursday. So they are looking to improve their roster — rather than pare it — before Tuesday’s 3 p.m. PT trade deadline. The Padres have hardly been on a tear and have gained ground. While not nearly enough ground — losing two of three to the Pirates this week means the Padres sit just 1½ games closer to that final wild-card spot than they were on July 16 — the forward progress has shown what can happen.

Multiple people in the organization suggested over the past couple weeks that you don’t give up on a roster with talent like Xander Bogaerts, Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr., Yu Darvish, Hader, Machado, Musgrove and Snell. You don’t sacrifice even one potential pennant race because you might be a few games outside the normal range of being considered a contender at the trade deadline. You ride that roster. You try to supplement it.

They believe it strongly enough that — barring a bad weekend and/or a great offer — they are fine risking Snell and Hader leaving as free agents without receiving any real compensation.
