The effects and reasoning behind Elizabeth Holmes' voice alteration.

In it, she referenced several other articles that focused on Ms. Holmes’ voice—all of them viewing it as an affectation to add gravitas to her persona. That it was an affectation is confirmed inwhere its author, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter John Carreyrou, described a conversation between Ms. Holmes and a Theranos employee:

“One evening as they wrapped up a meeting in her office shortly after he joined the company, she lapsed into a more natural-sounding young woman’s voice…her pitch several octaves higher than usual. In her excitement, she seemed to have momentarily forgotten to turn on the baritone.” Ms. Holmes’ desire to appear authoritative—especially in this break-the-glass-ceiling era—is quite understandable. As a coach, many women have asked me to help them improve their vocal production by showing them how to lower their high-pitched voices.

Just how to do that is a challenge. Ms. Holmes does it by forcing her voice to the back of her throat to produce the low register, but it also produces a stuffy sound. Look at herA better way to produce a richer tone is to use resonance, a technique that creates an echo effect of the voice inside the head.

Resonance does not compensate for Theranos’ fraudulent business or Elizabeth Holmes’ deceitful practices, but it could have helped her to develop a richer voice.
