With expulsion of diplomat is Canada finally getting tough with China? Canada will pay a price. But it is a price worth paying to defend democratic principles and the role of politicians to act without fear of foreign influence. StarEditorial

Accused of targeting Conservative MP Michael Chong, he was declared “persona non grata” by the Canadian government, thus ending his diplomatic status here in the country. The action came after drawn-out deliberations as politicians and bureaucrats weighed what to do in the face of inevitable retaliation by Beijing.

It was not, as the prime minister noted, a decision to be made lightly, especially considering the certainty that China will inflict some price for this action. “Should the Canadian side continue to make provocations, China will play along every step of the way until the very end,” a statement from the Chinese embassy in Ottawa declared.Remember that the regime held two Canadians – Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor – for more than 1,000 days to use as bargaining chipsBut the alternative, to do nothing, was not an option.

This a welcome assertion and a necessary step. However, the government’s action would been more forceful and sincere had it occurred when the activities of the Toronto-based Chinese diplomat first became known.
