The news that Nordstrom Inc. was leaving Canada — and most notably its flagship location in Toronto’s Eaton Centre
The decision by Nordstrom, which launched in Canada in 2014, that it would close all 13 stores, costing about 2,500 jobs, was the latest death rattle from a retailing genre that made a huge social and cultural impact over a century or so. In Toronto, the T. Eaton Co., established by Timothy Eaton in 1869 at Yonge and Queen, and rival Robert Simpson Co. across the street were innovators, landmarks and fierce rivals during the bricks-and-mortar generations of retail.
They offered restaurants, music and art displays, tea and reading rooms, post offices, travel services. In a word, everything.
