Pierre Poilievre and Francois Legault are both correct when they say Canada should shut down the Roxham Road illegal border crossing.

Legault recently wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying his province is overwhelmed by the number of asylum seekers pouring across the border at Roxham; he’s pleading with the feds to close the unofficial crossing. Under terms of the Safe Third Country Agreement, asylum seekers must make their claims in the first country they arrive in — either Canada or the U.S. Roxham Road is not an official border crossing and therefore provides a loophole to that agreement.Numbers have soared recently. A total of 4,689 people entered Canada illegally at Roxham in December, which is more than arrived there in all of 2021. It’s estimated at least 100 people enter this country at Roxham every day.
