The proposal by the department of immigration to speed up the citizenship process by allowing would\u002Dbe Canadians to “self\u002Daffirm” their oath of allegiance should be a non\u002Dstarter.

“Many clients have to take time off work to attend citizenship ceremonies and this time off is not necessarily paid for by employers,” the immigration department is quoted in the Gazette. New Canadians, especially those who have come from war-torn countries or dictatorships, appreciate the peace and freedoms this country has to offer and are proud to affirm their loyalty. Clicking a button on a computer in your pyjamas in your basement may be more convenient. It isn’t a worthy way to mark this extraordinary milestone.
