The C.D. Howe Institute has given Durham Region one of the lowest grades in the country for its 2022 budget.
The institute does an analysis of the financial statements every municipality publishes each fiscal year for legislators and voters. “To non-experts, the transparency of these documents matters: from them, readers should be able to understand the government’s plans, see how results differed from plans, discern the implications for the government’s future capacity to deliver services, and hold the government accountable for its performance,” the study reads.
The report looked at 32 major Canadian municipalities and Durham was among the “less satisfactory” which reflects “multiple problems with transparency, reliability and timeliness.” Durham scored lower, in part, because they did not actually publish the statements until the end of 2022, but they benefited from the “lenient” use of the date for the auditor’s signature for the release of the statements.Durham’s ‘D+’ grade was only better than Regina’s ‘D’ grade and Halifax’s ‘D-‘If you have found a spelling error, please, notify us by selecting that text and pressing
