Researchers at the University of California looked at risk factors for cardiovascular disease among mostly Latina women in the United States who feared deportation either for themselves or for family members, and found an increased risk of high blood pressure and other heart diseases.Researchers did not reveal whether the women were US residents or undocumented immigrants due to privacy concerns.
Researchers also measured the impact of deportation worry on diastolic blood pressure -- the bottom number in a blood pressure reading that measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart is resting between beats -- and found only a weak link. They did not find a significant link between deportation worry and body mass index, waist circumference or pulse pressure.
