Democratic leaders are publicly acknowledging the top number for the party's social spending bill is likely to drop below $3.5 trillion as the party grapples with its thin margins in both chambers of Congress
Congressional Democrats don’t want to talk about the discord around the total cost of President Joe Biden’s social spending plan, even as that elusive figure remains the biggest impediment to the party’s agenda.
“It's time for [Senate Majority Leader Chuck] Schumer to bring them in and try to get to a number,” said Sen. Jon Tester , referring to Sinema and Manchin. “Chuck has to do that. He has to bring them in … Nobody can do it except him, because anything that we agree on doesn't matter.” “Right now I’m still operating on the assumption that what we voted on, $3.5 trillion, is what we should be negotiating for,” Warren said.
