Lady Deer closing in on new regional crown after 7-5 win

Lady Deer pitcher Aubrey Graham, in relief of starter Reanna Nieman, was immune to issuing those free passes to first base. In four and one-third innings, Graham didn’t walk a batter, while retiring 14 of the 21 batters she faced after entering the pitching circle with two outs in the third. Then in the sixth and Deer Park only up 6-5, two more ground balls led to her fielders chucking home for the forceout, preventing the tie. Unfortunately, one of those key plays came with a price. Catcher Erin Perez had to be helped off the field, finishing the game on crutches after Hailey Golden tried unsuccessfully to slide around Perez’s tag attempt.
Katelynn Carpenter, the third Pearland pitcher, was the most effective. After a rough start, she settled down and retired 12 of the next 13 Lady Deer batters she faced.
