The National Capital Commission is reimagining how people use Ottawa\u0027s waterfront property. They need to listen to residents.
In Ottawa, though, that’s more easily imagined than done, and not simply because it’s difficult to find a bistro that carries pisco. It’s almost as difficult to find spaces along the waterfront that encourage that sort of thing.For a city that was originally built and thrived because of its rivers and, eventually, a canal, it’s remarkable how much we underutilize them.winters, while some folks cruise on it in the summer. Residents cycle and run along water-adjacent driveways and parkways.
It’s my hope that some of the planners at the National Capital Commission, in particular, share some of my predilections as they update their nearly 20-year-old National Capital Core Area Sector Plan to make Ottawa more inviting. Much of the unsightliness was hauled away, beginning around the turn of the last century with the creation of the Ottawa Improvement Commission, which later became the Federal District Commission and, subsequently, the NCC that we know and alternately love and loathe today. The earliest priority of the OIC was to clean up the banks of the Rideau Canal and create parks and parkways. So there’s that.
Nussbaum is a former city councillor and so should understand the importance of these waterways to Ottawa residents, and not just as ethereal iconic representations of Canada’s democracy that the NCC includes in its mandate.
