Opinion: Canada\u0027s relationship with China has soured after interference in its elections. Abandoning its One China policy seems more likely.

Released in November, the strategy marked Canada’s shift away from China toward a more regional approach — something that experts describe as “a generational shift”.

Still, there are only seven references to Taiwan in 26 pages. Four are about working with partners to “push back against any unilateral actions that threaten the Taiwan Strait.” Canada also recently reopened talks with Taiwan on a foreign investment promotion and protection agreement — essentially a free-trade agreement that outlines the rules.

The other partnership members are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam.Article content
