What's more, what appears to set this year apart is the way victims are dying: They suffer from much more violence.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cuyahoga County will top 200 homicides for the third straight year, something that officials say hasn’t happened in 40 years.
In the last two years, the number of slayings in the county reached just beyond 250. The county’s medical examiner is investigating 213 murders through mid-December, and the number could hit 235 by the end of this year. Cleveland City Councilman Michael Polensek said the city will soon add more resources to combat gun violence.
Cleveland has struggled responding to violent crime, partly because it is down 331 officers; it should have 1,640. The city has increased its recruiting efforts, but new hires have failed to keep up the pace of retirements and resignations. This year, there have been violent deaths in 19 cities and villages in the county. Some suburban cities, such as Valley View, Fairview Park and University Heights, have not reported any.
Daniel Flannery, a professor at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, said firearm deaths are increasing partly because guns are easily accessible.“So, there are guns being converted into a semiautomatic weapon or a shoulder harness that’s added to a handgun that makes it operate more like a machine gun, for example, or the bump stocks that make the triggers continue to pull continuously,” Flannery said.
