African-Caribbean Engagement Programme has shown that young people who participate in their sessions are becoming closely engaged with cricket and increasing their levels of physical activityNEW INDEPENDENT data, released as part of a report celebrating the ACE Programme’s third birthday, has shown that young people who participate in ACE sessions are becoming closely engaged with cricket and increasing their levels of physical activity.

The ACE Programme was launched by Surrey County Cricket Club in January 2020 with the intention to inspire the wider game to support reconnecting with the Black community, following a 75% decline in Black British professional players over the last 20 years and further research that showed less than 1% of players in the recreational game were from the Black community.

Recently, ACE celebrated its third birthday with an event to launch the report at its spiritual home of The Kia Oval, attended by supporters including Sir Trevor McDonald OBE, incoming ECB Chief Executive and former ACE trustee Richard Gould, Sport England Chief Executive Tim Hollingsworth and legendary England batter, Sky broadcaster and ACE patron Mark Butcher. The ACE vision is to be a catalyst to accelerate change, supporting diverse talents from the grassroots to the elite.

Across the ACE community hub programme in Birmingham, Bristol and London, 87% of participants do not play cricket elsewhere, 33% of the young people taking part are female and 50% are from the Black community. 95% of the staff, volunteers and trustees that work on the ACE Programme come from Black, Mixed Black or minority ethnic communities.

“ACE has started to engage a demographic that were in danger of being left behind by cricket – and has given opportunities to a large number of young people, who are now in the position to make cricket a part of their life for decades to come.“We truly believe cricket has the ability to be representative of our society and support young people from diverse and lower socioeconomic backgrounds, allowing them to thrive.
