Tom Urbaniak, a Cape Breton University political scientist and public policy expert, says the Nova Scotia government needs to be upfront with the public about why it's continuing with the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for health-care workers. - SaltWire Network file photoHALIFAX, N.S. — Nova Scotia’s vaccine mandate, which has kept badly needed health-care workers suspended without pay for more than a year, can no longer be justified, a Cape Breton University professor says.
The Chronicle Herald has repeatedly asked the Department of Health and Wellness to provide the basis for keeping the policy in place but has yet to be provided an explanation for what additional risks unvaccinated people pose in a health-care setting. Ontario dropped the requirement almost a year ago. Precluding the announcement, the province provided several reasons for lifting the mandate, such as a stable COVID-19 test positivity rate and declining hospitalizations, as well as the province’s high vaccination rate and the availability of antiviral treatments.
"An extraordinary, constraining measure should not simply linger in place unless there is compelling scientific justification that it protects the public while impeding civil liberties no more than is necessary under the circumstances," he said.
