If you’re accepted as a stem cell donor, it’s likely you’ll never get a call to actually donate. But if you do donate, odds are you’ll save somebody’s ...

“There was a big crowd there and I was one of them,” said Landry, who was born and raised on Isle Madame in Cape Breton and is retired from a career in journalism and education communications.

In his second stem cell donation, in 2008, the cells were harvested through a more typical blood collection process directly from the veins in his arms. About one in 10 donors are asked - for specific patient-related reasons - to undergo a bone marrow operation. It’s also a day procedure and “very safe,” Seftel said, but it does involve being put under general anesthetic in a hospital operating room.

“I did get two letters from the recipient .. .thanking me and showing me their appreciation for what I’ve done,” he said, but the person’s name was redacted. “So yes, we are making an appeal to people to register,” Seftel said, noting that you should be healthy and between 17 and 35.
