Chief U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Craig Gargotta ordered Pettit to turn over his passport to his then-lawyer at the first court hearing in the cases in early June.Concerns about whether Pettit would become a fugitive arose during Wednesday’s bankruptcy court hearing on whether Pettit should be released from jail.
“It was never my intent to go to Mexico,” answered Pettit, who took the witness stand in handcuffs and ankle shackles. “I would stay here in San Antonio.” At Wednesday’s hearing, Pettit said he planned to see his son and start looking for work after he was released. He said he’d stay with friends in the area until he could find a place of his own.Gargotta reluctantly decided to release Pettit because, he said, he believed Pettit could “best cooperate” with the trustee administering the bankruptcy estates if he was no longer incarcerated.
