“If they had been radically transparent from the beginning, it might not have turned into the story that it did,” said Smith, who added she has encouraged the AER to be “more proactive” in its communication, but the regulator did its job by demanding a “very quick resolution.”

“We expect the premier to be fully transparent with ACFN, other Indigenous communities and the public, and to demand accountability at all levels for the many failures that resulted in this incident,” he said. “We expect real action from the premier and every other responsible official to ensure that it never happens again.”Article content

Other communities are also angry with how communication was handled by Imperial Oil and the Alberta government. “This is a failure of the provincial regulator to do its job. The AER and Canada approved Imperial’s project knowing the risk of seepage for this tailing pond. There needs to be an independent review of the approval of this tailings pond and the AER’s management of this mess,” said Chief Billy-Joe Tuccaro in a statement. “Canada and Alberta need to establish a commission to look at solutions for tailings accumulation.
