Protest over potential returning of funds held outside city hall, sprawls into council chambers

Council on Tuesday voted 6-4 against a motion that the applicants for potential funds, a joint proposal from New Dawn Enterprises and the Ally Centre of Canada, would be approved for the RHI city stream for their affordable housing project and to “negotiate an agreement to protect the CBRM from any possible capital overruns or operational shortfall,” according to CBRM’s municipal planning and development director, Michael Ruus.
Non-profits, at least one other expression-of-interest applicant and nearly 100 community members crowded the council chambers gallery and a nearby boardroom inside the Civic Centre followed a short protest outside city hall. The joint proposal from New Dawn and the Ally Centre called for a 20-24-unit facility to go up in the Mira Road area that would house the CBRM’s most vulnerable, nameless those considered homeless, and on-site harm reduction needs.
