The students of CASA have set the bar very high in this young performance season in their performance of ‘Rent’.
Well, ‘tis the season for the high school play. Musicals, dramas, and comedies are all scheduled for the next few months. Over the years, I’ve seen many performances; however, on the evening of March 24th, 2023, I saw something special: Weary Arts Group’s production of ‘Rent’ performed by the students of Capital Area School for the Arts Charter School , at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg.
This description doesn’t give the play justice, but Director Cal Weary and the students of CASA certainly do. His magical directing, coupled with students’ talent, has this play indistinguishable from its Broadway counterpart. The play is very complicated. Some people who aren’t familiar with it, nor the movie of the same name, may have difficulty following or understanding what’s going on. I mean, the action is fast and furious, and the music never stops! The play seems to be just one, long song. I found the plot and its execution brilliant.
