Speaker of the House Keith Bain, who also serves as PC MLA for Victoria Lakes, has said he will be staying on as Speaker when the spring session of the provincial legislature convenes on March 21. ERIC WYNNE/SALTWIRE NETWORKSYDNEY, N.S. — No one is more relieved about Keith Bain retaining his role as Speaker of the House with the Nova Scotia Legislature than the veteran Progressive Conservative MLA for Victoria-The Lakes himself.
“The main thing is I’m very pleased to make it in the spring session and will go on until the end of the summer, until such point when any changes are made.”Read moreReports of ousting speaker “There were a couple of members of the legislature that had tested positive , and they weren’t in the legislature,” Bain explained. “Still, the concern was there. Plus, we didn’t allow the public in at that time for that same reason.”
Keith Bain's future as Speaker of the House was up in the air last fall, when reports surfaced that Premier TIm Houston and his PC caucus had gathered to discuss the possibility of removing Bain as Speaker, in light of a couple of decisions Bain made that apparently didn’t sit well with the premier.
“Once you’re chosen Speaker, only when the House is sitting of course, you have to be neutral,” Bain said. “If you’re not, you aren’t being fair to the other 54 members that are in the Assembly.
