“It’s about the history of grass and, and how it’s tied to colonization and heteronormative concepts of a nuclear family that were pushed onto society and individuals,” said Allison. “When lawns became more of a normal thing, it was in the forties and fifties when suburbs became a thing. The only people living in the suburbs were white and wealthy.”
‘Roses for Elsie,’ A piece inspired by artist Carrie Allison's late grandmother's rose garden, is a series of seven abstract depictions of beaded roses. Carrie's exhibition"Askîy" is a part of Cape Breton / Unama'ki Centre for Craft and Design's"Sustainability Series" focusing on showcasing indigenous artists and promoting sustainable art practices.
“For example, in history, Mi’kmaw people had to be creative with the types of objects they were making within the community because those objects weren’t just beautiful, they also had a function,” she said.
