The province has announced an increase to the Creative Saskatchewan Production Grant Program bringing the total to $10 million for 2022\u002D23.

“I’m much happier today than I was 10 years ago today when the then government ended my career and ended the careers of almost 2,000 people,” said Layton Burton who is also a broadcast lab instructor at the University of Regina’s School of Journalism.

The grant program replaced Saskatchewan’s Film Employment Tax Credit which began in 1998 and was axed in 2012. She said the ministry consulted with stakeholders, including SMPIA, but would not say whether she heard calls for the return of the tax credit during those conversations.Culture and Sport critic for the NDP Matt Love said only time will tell what the success of a bolstered program will be.

Burton said while he can’t help but feel “a tinge of sadness” for all the friendships, businesses and people lost when the tax credit was cut, he’s happy and hopeful that this investment will make a difference.
