Public agencies like Alberta Health Services, often derided today, responded quickly and courageously. Police, fire, EMS, doctors, nurses, emergency responders – they were all fantasticwas inspirational in the crisis, encouraging Calgarians and backing city responders.

A near-miracle occurred when the Stampede opened as usual not three weeks after the flood. Since the end of the First World War, nothing had ever forced cancellation., promised the show would go on if that was humanly possible. And it did, even though the Saddledome had been flooded up to the eighth row of seats, the grounds were completely inundated, and many buildings badly damaged.
The years since the flooding haven’t always been so noble. As memories fade, governments lose energy and slow down. It’s almost a law of political physics.
