An Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement boat searches the waters off of Hammond for two missing swimmers from Elk Grove Village, Illinois, on Saturday, July 6, 2024. The bodies of two Illinois men missing in Lake Michigan since they went swimming off a boat on July 5 near Hammond were recovered Friday afternoon, according to a release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement.
Indiana Conservation Officer Alex Neel said Tuesday that the division’s boat was using sonar near Whiting, 1 to 3 miles offshore, but high winds and heavy waves were hampering the recovery. Officers were conducting searches along the shoreline as well. After a multi-agency search, the U.S. Coast Guard located the man wearing a life jacket. He was transported to an area hospital and later released.Authorities earlier said that one of the people on the boat was from Mount Prospect.
