2 boaters go missing on Lake Michigan near Whiting, Indiana
WHITING, Ind. -- Crews were searching Lake Michigan on Friday evening for two missing boaters who jumped into the water near Whiting, Indiana .Officials said a boat with 12 people on board was sailing in the lake near Whiting. Around 2:30 p.m., one individual jumped off the boat to go swimming.They began to struggle because of the winds and waves present on the water at the time, according to Indiana Conservation Officer Alex Neel.
A third individual put on a life jacket and also jumped into the water.Police received a 911 call at around 2:40 p.m. Crews found the boat about a mile-and-a-half off the shoreline. Police marine unit officers boarded a small powerboat that had been damaged near the mouth of the Indiana Harbor near the Inland Steel plant.The U.S. Coast Guard found the person who was wearing the life jacket. He was taken to a local hospital and later released.The other two men were not located.
