, which last year had one of the worst seasons in modern baseball, is this season going whole-hog on Beane-inspired analytics.
I think it's going to really turn baseball into a chess match. You're going to see some really smart people doing some things again based on this information that'll be pretty unique.Billy Beane: Mastering MoneyballCould you recount how you came to do the blasting away of 150 years of conventional wisdom on how the game should be played, how players should be evaluated?: It came out of necessity based on our revenue situation with 30 baseball teams.
At the time, there was also a direct correlation between how much you spent on players and how many games you won. Since we [the Oakland As] were 29th or 30th in payroll, if we ran our business exactly like everybody else, we knew we were destined to fail. But really, the precursor to all of this was somewhat my own career as a player and then also some of the people that I was surrounded by that had a huge influence.
The one skill that stood out that had the strongest correlation to winning baseball games was the ability to get on base, which essentially meant take a walk and understand the strike zone. The advantage to us was this was a skill that was about the eighth or ninth highest paid skill in the game. People weren't paying for it, so a small market club or a low revenue club like ourselves could pay for it.
